Wakatobi National Park is a marine national park in Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia. The name of Wakatobi is an acronym of the four main Tukangbesi Islands: Wangi-wangi, Kaledupa, Tomia, and Binongko. Since 2005 the park is listed as a tentative World Heritage Site.

Now a National Marine Park covering the entire Waktobi District, it comprises a total of 1.4 million hectares, of which 900,000 hectares are decorated with different, colourful species of tropical coral reefs. For Wakatobi is widely recognized as having the highest number of reef and fish species in the world. The islands are also famous as the largest barrier reef in Indonesia, second only to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. Here can be found fringing, atolls and barrier reefs and offer more than 50 spectacular dive sites easily accessible from the major islands. This is the habitat of large and small fish species, the playground of dolphins, turtles and even whales.

The island group comprises 143 larger and smaller islands where only 7 are inhabited counting a total population of around 100,000, while the others remain uninhabited. Most notable are the Bajo communities, the seafaring nomads who inhabit many of Indonesia’s remote islands.

Situated at the end of the south eastern “petal’ of the orchid shaped island of Sulawesi and separated by the deep Banda Sea to its north and east and the Flores sea to its south, the name Wakatobi is in fact an acronym of its four main islands, which are : Wangi-wangi (WA), Kaledupa (KA), Tomia (TO) and Binongko (BI).

Due to its magnificent underwater life, Wakatobi is fast gaining worldwide attention for its quality dives that can be made by beginners to professionals. Small wonder, therefore, that many liveaboards make this one of their main ports of sojourn. Aside from its dive sites, Wakatobi has many superb beaches.

The conservation group “Operation Wallacea” is very active in this marine park, conducting underwater research and conservation. During the Sail Wakatobi 2011 in August, the Marine Laboratory on Hoga Beach by Kaledupa is to be officially inaugurated.

The District capital of Wakatobi is Wanci on Wangi-Wangi. Since the opening of the Matohara Airport on Wangi-Wangi, these remote islands are now more accessible and can be reached by flights from Jakarta or Makassar. There is also another landing strip on Tomia island, which receives charters from Bali.

Location and topography
Wakatobi National Park is located south-east of Sulawesi, between 05°12’-06°10’S and 123°20’-124°39’E, between the Banda Sea to the north-east and the Flores Sea to the south-west.
It consists of four larger islands: Wangi-Wangi, Kaledupa, Tomia and Binongko, as well as many small islands such as Tokobao, North Lintea, South Lintea, Kampenaune, Hoga and Tolandono. The highest elevation is 274 metres (899 ft) on Wangi-Wangi, followed by Lagole Hill (271m) on Tomia, Terpadu Hill (222 m) on Binongko and Mount Sampuagiwolo (203 m) on Kadelupa. The water depth varies, with the deepest parts reaching 1,044 metres (3,425 ft).

The types of vegetation found in the national park are mangrove forest, coastal forest, lowland swamp forest, riverbank vegetation, lowland rainforest, mountain rainforest and coral reefs. The Wakatobi Archipelago has 25 groups of coral reefs including fringing reefs, barrier reefs and atolls. A survey conducted in 2003 identified 396 species of coral belonging to 68 genera and 15 families.[3] These include Acropora formosa, Acropora hyacinthus, Psammocora profundasafla, Pavona cactus, Leptoseris yabei, Fungia molucensis, Lobophyllia robusta, Merulina ampliata, Platygyra versifora, Euphyllia glabrescens, Tubastraea frondes, Stylophora pistillata, Sarcophyton throchelliophorum, and Sinularia species.
Among the recorded species of seabirds are the brown booby, common kingfisher and Malaysian plover.
Turtles in the park include the hawksbill turtle, loggerhead sea turtle, and olive ridley.

Human habitation
The main settlement in the islands is the administrative centre for the Regency Bau-Bau. In 2001 there were nearly 90,000 people living in the islands.

The indigenous people who live around the Park belong to the Bajau ethnic group. Locals still commonly use spear-fishing.

Itinerary:
DAY 01: WAKATOBI – ARRIVAL (L.D)
Arriving at the airport Matahora city wakatobi our staff guide will be pick you up then transfer to Hotel then Lunch.for further towards to the village area of ​​BAJO MOLA or commonly called tribal Wakatobi. This tour will be in combination with a visit to the village of seaweed cultivation as well as the place of manufacture of woven sarongs Wakatobi. Afternoon back to hotel and dinner at Manohara Resort

DAY 02: DOLPHIN – SNORKELING TOUR (B.L.D)
Morning our staff will pick you up at 05 .00 AM. Then we set out to follow the tour see the dolphin (Indonesia Called Lumba Lumba) around Wakatobi waters. After that back to the hotel for breakfast , then Continue with snorkeling activities to SOMBU BEACH.and lunch will be served of grilled fish on the beach.after that , we will snorkel in Turkish WAHA until near sunset. Then back to the hotel and stay at Hoga Island Resort

DAY 03: TOMIA ISLAND TOUR (B.L.D)
After breakfast at hotel depart to Tomia island with regular passenger ships. Arrive at Tomia, first we will drop the luggage to the inn. On this island of lodging houses, but it’s Bad & bathroom is very simple facilities and not air conditioning. Furthermore, you will be start to snorkeling activities until late afternoon. Lunch is served with menu-style of fish grilled Before returning to the hotel, we will be trekking to the summit KAHIANGAN VILLAGE to enjoy the beautiful sunset from this hill. (Peak of hahiangan is one of shooting location of the film mirror never lies produced by the producer from Jakarta several years ago. Then back to Hoga Island and overnight at Hoga Island Resort

DAY 04: SNORKELING TOUR (B.L.D)
Early in the morning, we will leave for the island KALEDUPA. The first moment comes, we will go in the bungalows, is precisely the citizens in the rental house specifically for tourists. then visit the other life of BAJO TRIBE that has a life of more unique is the house is built up over the sea. For this tour, we will visit the village of BAJO BAJO MANTIGOLA SAMPELA. During the day we will cross the island water pipe, directly check in to the bungalow and proceed with snorkeling with a small boat, and enjoy the beautiful sunset, then back to the Manohara Hotel and overnight.

DAY 05: WANGI WANGI – AIRPORT TRANFER OUT (B).
Early in the morning, cross back to KALEDUPA which is only 30 minutes sail , with regular joint public passenger vessels. drop to the city of Wakatobi then to Airport for flight to your next destination. End of tour & Service
